The A To Z Of Tiller For Tractors

Tractor mounted rotary tillers are dependable piece of equipment to cultivate the soil for seeding or planting. Whether one has a large garden, arable fields or an allotment to prepare, tillers make backbreaking task handy and fast.

How it Works?

Simply put, it digs into the soil and churns it into fine clod-free seedbed. Curved blades of the equipment are powered by tractor’s PTO. Skid shoes help to adjust the depth. It’s useful to know that the larger the tiller, the more depth it will achieve.

When buying a rotary tiller, go for the one that is in accordance with the width of the outside measurement of tractor tires. This is because not meeting this criteria leads to missing strips of soul and going over them again.

When Use a Tiller?

Generally, tiller is meant to be used in the spring when soil is prepared for late spring and summer crops. However, as per experts, the process can be made easy by getting the tiller out during the months of September or October.

Apart from these months, the equipment is easy to use in the autumn because then the ground is neither wet nor boggy.

When introducing organic matter to add nutrients in the soil, deep tilling before winter enables breaking down and nourishing the soil. This in other words means that the soil is in good condition and will only need harrow or single tilling.

First Time Tilling

If your have never tilled before or planning to reuse an area, follow the below given tips:

1.         Prepare the ground: If the land is overgrown or heavily impacted with weeds, prepare the ground . Top grasses, weeds and shrub followed by removing the woody material.

2.         Start slowly: Going too fast on a land that has not been tilled can lead to poor finish. Go slow, especially while dealing with large clods and compacted ground.

3.         Don’t go too deep: Turning over large amounts of soil puts too much strain on the shaft and results in damage.

4.         Go over several times: Go over the land several times and adjust the depth if deeper till is needed.

5.         Overlap: To skip missing any area, overlap with the previous strip you’ve tilled.
